What Does Wave Design?

Wave software recommends a starting custom lens design regardless of whether it's a single vision, front surface multifocal (toric or bi-toric), ortho k, toric-ortho k , toric, bi-toric lens or free form asymmetric lens. Designs have multiple aspheric curves as small as 10 microns wide depending upon the shape of the cornea. Wave automatically adjusts the front surface optics to work with the surface topography to create a higher performance lens than common off the shelf lenses.

How does it work?

Wave first imports raw topography data to convert to a corneal model to work with. Next a starting lens design is suggested. All Wave designs have multiple aspheric curves as small as 10 microns in diameter to closely follow the corneal shape.

Default designs tend to be larger as Wave uses the entire corneal map to 'know' the corneal periphery. Great emphasis is given to closely duplicating the corneal periphery into the lens periphery, resulting in better centering. At any time the designer may increase or decrease OAD (8.5-15mm), center or edge thickness.

The designer has full capability to alter the fit as they like. Wave designers think in term of tear film thickness when making adjustment to fit. Looking at the simulated fluorescein map, the designer 'grabs' and moves one of four control balls to increase or decrease tear thickness across the lens. Individual or combined control of up to eight meridians affects tear film in 90, 180 or 360 degree segments of the lens. The same control balls are used to adjust OZ, IZ and edge diameter and bevel lift.

Design changes with an easy drag-and-drop approach are seen in the simulated fluorescein map. Many other design changes are possible in addition to compound over-refractions, if necessary, to refine visual acuity. And Wave's automatic cross cylinder feature compares corneal cylinder to refractive cylinder with an option to incorporate the expected residual internal astigmatism on the front surface of the first lens.
